Health Inspector – Environmental Health Department

Job Summary 

Under general supervision, performs OSSF (septic system) permit reviews and inspections, as well as, Code Enforcement services related to Public Nuisances within the County’s Department of Environmental Health.

OSSF (On-Site Sewage Facility) Related Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviews on-site sewage disposal system applications and approves documentation for construction; conducts on-site inspections to ensure proper system installation; provides documentation of approval to operate the system.

  • Provides education and information to the public regarding proper maintenance of sewage disposal systems.

  • Investigates and documents violations of on-site sewage facility regulations.  Issues notices of violations or citations as needed.  

  • Maintains an awareness and adherence to state and local codes affecting on-site sewage facilities. .

Public Nuisance Related Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conducts investigations of nuisance complaints received from any source; documents all investigative actions with reports and site photographs and issues notices of violation or citations as needed.

  • Prepares cases to be filed in court; testifies in civil or criminal proceedings as appropriate.

  • Maintains an awareness and adherence to state and local codes affecting public nuisances.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent; AND two years of experience in code enforcement, waste water systems and/or on-site sewage facility programs; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources or the Department Director.  Undergraduate studies or a college degree is not required, but preferred.  An education concentrating in any field of science, criminal justice, or social sciences is preferred, but not required.

License & Certification Requirements (preferred at hire or obtained within 1 year of employment):

  • Code Enforcement Officer Certification. (Public Nuisance Investigations)

  • Designated Representative Certification. (OSSF Review, Inspections and Investigations)

  • FEMA Incident Command Structure (ICS) Course Completion Certifications.

  • Valid Texas Driver’s License – Required at hire.

 Physical Demands and Working Environment:

  • Work is performed both in an office and in an outdoor work environment.

  • May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases.

Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M, unless otherwise required.  Salary range is $17.68-$19.31 per hour based on qualifications and experience. Please apply at the Brazoria County Human Resources Department or applications may also be obtained and submitted at this website.
