LVN (Juvenile Probation)

SUMMARY

 

 

The licensed vocational nurse reports directly to the health services director and ultimately to the chief juvenile probation officer. The licensed vocational nurse will, under the supervision of the health services director, assist with meeting the health needs of the juveniles in detention, the juvenile justice alternative education program and residential facility as well as being a medical resource for the department as the need arises. Schedule is Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday through Tuesday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., working 9 days on and 5 days off(rotating schedules allows for every other weekend off).

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:

 

Regular attendance is required;

 

Works a schedule that involves weekends, evenings and/or nights;

 

Assists with medication disposal;

 

Inventories supplies biweekly and generates order list as needed;

 

Assists with education programs for staff and juveniles;

 

Shares call duty with the health services director;

 

Provides first aid as needed;

 

Assists in obtaining appropriate medical services for juveniles;

 

Notifies parents/guardians of need to refill medications;

 

Documents interactions with juveniles;

 

Follows board of nurse examiners regulations;

 

Receives incoming medications;

 

Assists the health services director in preparing evening medications for administration;

 

Assists with physicals for students enrolled in the juvenile justice alternative education program;

 

Maintains medication books and medication sheets;

 

Maintains records of health services on juveniles;

 

Assists with sick call daily and consults with the health services director on suspected problems;

 

Maintains cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid certification;

 

Administers medications and medical treatments following policies and procedures;

 

Maintains licensing as a licensed vocational nurse;

 

Maintains 80 hours biannually of approved training for juvenile supervision officer certification;

 

Performs other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

This is not a supervisory position.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or general equivalency diploma; and must be at least 21 years of age; and be a licensed vocational nurse licensed to practice in the state of Texas; and minimum 3 years nursing experience.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, and procedure manuals; and ability to write routine reports and correspondence; and ability to speak effectively to customers and to employees of organization.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. 

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; and ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

Valid Texas Driver’s License and proof of liability coverage;

Licensed vocational nurse.

 

OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Possess proficiency in health assessment;

Familiarity with local health care providers and facilities;

Ability to perform in a mentally and physically demanding working environment;

Required: Clean criminal history.

Ability to become trained in restraint techniques which involve flexibility (ex: ability to bend at the knees and waist, ability to bend elbows and other joints); and ability to place full body weight and weight of another on knees (into a kneeling position) and ability to take a deep step back, ability to twist body at torso; and ability to put body weight on one elbow and both knees at the same time; and ability to move suddenly and quickly; and ability to assist others in a restraint.

This job takes place in a private office in a large county juvenile facility and in a juvenile detention center at various times. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but may be loud and unpredictable when around unruly juveniles.

The incumbent in this job must be knowledgeable about and follow the County's safety policies and procedures; and ask supervisor for details; and proper precautions and following road safety laws are required at all times while driving.
