JOB TITLE: CHILDREN’S SPECIALIST I/II – Alvin Branch
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university, and at least three years library experience is preferred in the areas of supervision, reference, collection development, community relations and children’s literature. Ability to lift and carry loads of up to 40 pounds required. PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS: Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited college or university. Bilingual preferred.
JOB DESCRIPTION: Selects and maintains materials for children’s collection; weeds collection and monitors expenditures. Plans and coordinates children’s services and programs; presents multiple weekly programs. Plans and implements special summer reading program. Provides reference and reader’s advisory service including Internet searching
Develops a highly-visible public relations program for children’s services in the community, including schools and other organizations. Works with the Branch Librarian to develop budget request
Organizes and coordinates summer youth volunteer programs, attends bi-monthly children’s meetings. Maintains a current awareness of children’s literature and services. Identifies curriculum needs in the community; plans and provides services to meet these needs. Interprets and implements library policies and procedures for library users and staff; assumes supervisory responsibilities when assigned. Attends and participates in professional activities, conferences and committees. Maintains awareness in professional trends, methods and ethics. Performs other work as needed.
HOURS: 40 hours per week (Saturdays and evenings as scheduled).
