CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY:  

Under general supervision, monitors vehicular traffic within an assigned district of the County; checks facilities and properties; responds to and investigates reports of criminal activity and public and/or domestic disturbances.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Operates a police vehicle to patrol assigned geographical area

  • Performs close patrols of neighborhoods to detect potential criminal activities.

  • Observes business and residential properties for potential criminal activity; checks buildings for unauthorized entry; searches structures and property for intruders; investigates suspicious persons and events.

  • Responds to reports of robberies, thefts, burglaries and related activities; secures crime scenes; conducts interviews with complainants, victims, witnesses and suspects; gathers material evidence from the crime scene.

  • Responds to reports of public and domestic disturbances; physically restrains aggressive individuals; conducts interviews with complainants and witnesses; mediates and resolves complaints and disputes.

  • Makes arrests of individuals; subdues citizens with appropriate action and force; uses restraining devices; searches vehicles and individuals for weapons and contraband; transports arrested individuals to the County detention facility. 

  • Administers first-aid to injured citizens; calls for emergency medical assistance.

  • Provides court testimony regarding various criminal and civil cases.

  • Completes various reports, logs and records of activities on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

  • Provides warrant and civil process services as necessary.

  • Performs special assignments, including narcotics and investigations as needed.

  • Provides school zone safety services as needed.

  • Conducts inspections of businesses as necessary.

  • Maintains inventory of equipment, materials and supplies for daily operations.

  • Builds relationships with citizens and businesses to increase community awareness, support and involvement in crime prevention.

  • Monitors and observes vehicular traffic; detects vehicles exceeding posted speed limits or otherwise being driven in a dangerous or unlawful manner; stops vehicles and investigates circumstances; issues traffic citations as necessary.

  • Responds to reports of traffic accidents; administer first-aid to injured citizens; places calls for emergency assistance.

           Performs traffic control; oversees the accident scene; conducts interviews with involved drivers and witnesses to obtain information and facts; gathers material evidence      

                                         

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    Education, Experience and Training Guidelines : Must 21 years of age           

    High school diploma or equivalent; AND two years of law enforcement experience, including two years within a jail setting handling prisoners; OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience as determined by Human Resources.    

     

    Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of law enforcement.

  • Texas criminal and civil codes.

  • Texas traffic laws.

  • Criminal case reporting and preparation methods and techniques.

  • Interviewing and interrogation techniques.

  • Investigative practices and procedures.

  • Basic emergency medical practices and techniques.

  • Mediation and intervention methods.

  • Local government codes.

  • Court system.

  • Legal terminology.

  • County geography.

  • Department policies, procedures and regulations covering specific areas of assignment.

     

    Skill in:

  • Communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with managers, supervisors, employees, external public agencies, attorneys, bonding companies, vendors and the general public.

  • Using initiative, discretion and decision making within established procedures, guidelines and rules.

  • Operating a personal computer and various software applications.

     

    LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Peace Officer license-Basic.

    Possession of a valid Texas state driverā€™s license.

     

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

    Work is performed both in an indoor and outdoor work environment. May be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 100 pounds.
